কেউ হাসলে বা কিছু বললে বলত, ‘she’s my sister’.

Lesson in Life

It was my first class and I was a bit nervous.

I had been teaching for many years since before I joined IIUC but entering a class full of grown up students who were not very much younger than me was somehow a little intimidating not to think of teaching them English Literature at Honours level. I began by introducing myself and asked for brief introductions from the twelve students to give myself some time to familiarize. They were all good students with good academic background and I was delighted to have them in the first batch of the Department of English Language and Literature, IIUC.

One of the students however caught my eye for her exceptional name. She was called Barhana. ‘What does is mean?’ I asked her. ‘I don’t know’, she replied frankly, ‘it’s just something my father fancied’.

In a few days every teacher was discussing her for her exceptional interest in literature, her depth of understanding, her brilliance and her gusto. I was happy to go to class everyday because I knew she would be there to ask intelligent questions and stimulate me to my best performance. So, when she brought her notebook to me to check her question answers I was only too glad to oblige till I accidentally found something disturbing one day.

I called her to my room the next day and made her sit and explain the suicide note I found in her notebook when it fell from my table and the page dropped out. She explained truthfully that she loved someone but he was not interested due to a previous loss in his life. ‘No one is worth your life’, I said to her, ‘life is too precious to throw away for one disappointment. You are a brilliant girl endowed with so many talents and qualities and you have a bright future ahead of you. Leave these thoughts and concentrate on your studies and ask Allah to do what is best for you when the right time arrives’. She saw the point and agreed to give up such thoughts.

In spite of her worries she came first in the midterm exam and I was delighted to see that she had kept her word.

A few months later, I met her at the gate of the main campus of IIUC. I was really surprised when she introduced me to a gentleman who she said was her husband. She had been married a month by then, to the man she had thought of dying for, with the blessings of her family. By the end of the semester she was happy and doing ever better in her studies.

So, I was really surprised when she suddenly stopped attending the classes at the beginning of the next semester. Salma Madam informed me that she had some problems with some classmates but she had counseled her to ignore these and continue her studies. I asked her classmates if anyone knew where she was or why she was not coming to class, with no result. No one else in the Department had any information either. But she did not come even after two weeks.

Finally, I could not stand it anymore. I went to the place where her husband worked and searched him out. He told me that she was a little sick but she was going to be well soon, it was nothing to worry about. At this time I went to a clinic to visit a student of Presidency International School whose family had been in a serious accident and fortunately all had survived in spite of serious injuries. When I was coming out I was surprised to meet her husband outside the clinic. He admitted, reluctantly, that Barhana was admitted there since fifteen days, she was shortly to be released and he had come to pick her up. Immediately I went to her room. She was sitting up on the edge of her hospital bed and her mother was sitting on a chair in front of her. She tried to straighten when she saw me but I could see that she was too weak and told her to relax. Together between them Barhana and her mother explained to me that she had been diagnosed with a rare blood disorder for which there was no cure as only about two hundred patients had been found worldwide. She was being released for the time being as she was feeling a little better but she was still very weak and might have to be readmitted if the symptoms became severe again.

I bade farewell bravely encouraging her to attend classes when she felt better but inside my heart I had a sinking feeling in the face of so much suffering in one so young. Usually I like to be in control of things because I do not like the feeling of helplessness that overcomes one when they know there is nothing they can do. But this moment reminded me that there is very little that we actually can do in the face of Allah’s wishes but pray.

She fought bravely and even came to university a few times on and off till we did not see her on campus anymore. She was admitted to Chittagong Medical College. I went to visit her whenever I could after university. She looked worse every time. In the beginning she would try to sit up when she saw me or occasionally Salma Apa would accompany me, later on she gave up trying even to turn around. I spoke to her mother who looked more and more anxious but there seemed to be no hope of recovery. Later on I dreaded these visits simply because I could not see such pain anymore.

I had not been able to visit her for a few days when one morning, Eftekhar Sir came to inform me that her condition had worsened the previous day and she was taken to Dhaka for treatment where she succumbed to death at night. Certainly we have come from Allah and to Him is our return.

People think, as teachers, we teach our students. What they do not know, however, is we learn a lot from our students, sometimes more than we teach. Barhana was near to my heart and even now she is never far from my mind. She taught me that life is indeed precious as it is a temporary gift and all our talent, capacity and strength is a currency for investment during our life on earth to earn the profit that will determine our fate in the Herafter. We may live to be old or die in the full bloom of youth like Barhana. But what ultimately matters is what we have done with the time we had in hand.

Isaac Dinesen wrote in Out of Africa, ‘the world is round so we cannot see too far down the road’. So, there is not much sense in planning too far ahead. Making the best of the present moment is best, for this moment is the foundation of the future – on this earth and the next.

Extremist!

My hubby was sad this morning when someone called him an ‘extremist’ because we pray and my daughter and I cover. He was not sad however because of being labelled. He was sad at the ignorance prevalent among us, the muslims, regarding the basics of Islam. If anything, we would not even consider ourselves standing at the foot of the tower of duties we are supposed to perform. And if that is considered extreme, what duties are our muslim brothers and sisters doing towards Allah’s satisfaction?

A few hours later I was reading Surah An’am with that thought still poking in mind. Allah says in a few ayahs in the beginning how people are blind and deaf to the signs of Allah and lie about him, how they will find out about the truth on the Day of Judgment and wish they could return to life on earth so as to do things right this time round. This led me to thinking about an episode of X-Files which showed how things will turn out in the exact same way no matter how many times and how many ways we try to stop it till we change our mindset.

Suddenly, from the thought of mindset I was trying to imagine the psychological attributes of such tyrants as Hitler, Chengish Khan, the Bush father and son and their kind and trying to imagine how much fun it would be to watch them being tried on the Day of Judgment. I was lost in the thought for quite some time when I remembered something that happened when I was hardly four years old but it has been etched in my memory with so many other childhood memories.

I had spent about three months with my mother at my maternal grandparents’ home in the village when I was three and a half or nearly four. One monsoon day, while a storm raged outside, my mother and her three brothers were having tea and muri (rice puffs) in the drawing room. The siblings chatted and laughed whenever they saw someone’s roof flying off in the wind. Suddenly, while they were still laughing, their own roof, only the part over the drawing room, flew off!

This memory brought me back to reality. My brothers and sisters still have time and opportunity to learn and practice and surpass us in ‘extremism’ and even clinch the prize on the Day of Judgment while we remain as helpless onlookers! So, there is no time to waste and no room for complacency. It is a race to the finish and it requires the same amount of dedication and concentration lest we lose the path before we reach the finish line …

Walking on Water

When I was small I used to listen to a Hindi song that went, 'Ajkal paer zameen par nehi parte mere, bolo dekha hain kabhi tumne mujhe urte huwe' (My feet do not touch the ground nowadays, tell me, have you ever seen me flying?). I loved the song for whatever I was able to understand of it. Being able to do the impossible always seemed very attractive to me. Well, I did not fly but I got to do something no less interesting. I walked on water!

Day before yesterday we went to vist Lake Louise in the Rocky Mountains. The snow on the plains melted long ago. So, we were surprised to find the mountains covered by snow a foot deep. First we thought it had descended from the upper slopes of the mountains and then we realized that we were on the upper slopes of the mountain! We had not anticipated the cooler weather and the wind. Our fingers were stung by the cold wind. But what we saw when we reached the Lake was more amazing than the surprise we had experienced so far.

Lake Louise is created by the molten snow from the peaks of Rocky Mountain sorrounding it on all sides. Being in the slope of mountains, it is deep. Having nothing to shadow it but the sky, it is clear blue. But it is also tinged with green due to the reflection of the evergreen forests that cover the mountains. However, this time when we reached the Lake, the only colour on the Lake was white! The Lake has been frozen over by the winter.

It is dangerous to descend on frozen lakes as the layer of ice is ofen thin and the swift undercurrent of the liquid water underneath pulls people away from the opening so fast, if one happens to fall in, that rescue is almost out of the question. One has a cold and suffocating death awaiting him in that case. I pondered on it for a while looking again and again at the sign on the bank that read, 'Danger, thin ice'. Then I said, 'Forget it, how many times in life does one get the opportunity to walk on water?' So, I leave my husband and children on safe grounds and off I go!

Walking on ice is no different from walking on the solid ground except that you have to be very careful not to slip. I covered a long distance safely. But the thrill of knowing that there is deep water underneath your feet and you do not know how to swim, not that it would be any use if you could swim, is beyond expression. Just that was worth making the trip in the cold weather!

School versus University

Dear Friends and students, please know I did not mean to hurt anyone when I said, “I always enjoyed working in school more than working in university. The unconditional love showered by the young and innocent students is incomparable. In university, you have to earn it with sweat, blood and tears ... so to speak!”

I never thought I would teach. Never in a million years with my shyness and aversion to socialization. I was still a student of Honours when I went to admit my brothers in Chittagong Grammar School and the Principal proposed that I teach there. My first reaction was to laugh and say, “Oh, you are saying this because you do not know me!” But somehow he convinced me to join after a few meetings. I joined as an Assistant teacher in class one, sure that I was going to make a fool of myself. But the students were so loving and trusting that they gave me handmade cards and notes saying how much they loved me … everyday! This did away with my inhibitions and made me feel responsible to return their love. I gave up on my plans for leaving and concentrated on becoming a good teacher.

The first problem I solved was one I did not imagine myself capable of. The students refused to sit with or speak to a girl when they heard she was a Hindu. The class teacher did not know what to do. So, she let it rest hoping it would figure itself out. I asked her to let me try. I spoke to them and explained about the differences and similarities between each of us in spite of belonging to the same religion and country and told them about my best friend who was a Hindu and how much she always helped me. Then I asked for volunteers who would sit with her. I still remember the three students who came forward first and it was quite alright the by the next day.

Since then, I have worked as Academic Coordinator and teacher of Presidency International School. I have been able to teach all levels of students and been able to help with the most intimate problems of students and their parents. I have been able to try out different ways of teaching including taking students for field trips, shopping, classes in the open, nature classes and they have always responded well, Alhamdulillah.

I began teaching in school 14 years ago but my students and their guardians still remember me wherever they see me. I had two students at CGS who would sit one on each knee and follow me from class to class with their books and all. Once, I went to KAFCO with my parents to meet a relative of one of his colleagues and when the lady opened the door she started shouting to her daughter, “Look! Your teacher is here!” forgetting in the surprise of the moment that it was my father who was the guest! I remember a student who requested his parents to admit him in Presidency International School because he met me for a round trip of the school and liked me! (Even I have never liked myself so much!) I remember once I went to a class to talk to the class teacher and a student there who saw me for the first time suddenly hugged me so tight and so long I thought she was never going to let go! Even her mother could not explain what happened. I still do not know why she did that but it felt really good to feel all that love just oozing into you! Students would come to my language lab and giggle and have fun and sometimes tell me stories. They had such pure and innocent hearts! I prayed they (and I) could remain like that for the rest of our lives.

The success rates and changes we can affect in young students is amazing if not unbelievable. Our classteacher for class two was so frustrated by his students at PIS that he just thrust himself out of the class one day and said, “Rehnuma apa, they are impossible! I cannot teach them English.” So, I took over and realized the poor kids had come from Bangla medium and had no working knowledge of English to begin with. I chucked the syllabus and began storybooks and films with them. We did lots of writing and lots of discussions on what they read and the videos they watched. I was able to hand them back to the teacher in three months and they finished their syllabus in time for the final exam! Students who did not know a word of English were winning debate and elocution contests in English within a year! It was incredible!

I joined university in 2000. My first class at university was more like a scrutiny, with me as the subject! The second class was with another Department and they seemed the least interested to learn English. I was seriously contemplating going back to my lair. But I cannot resist a challenge. So, I kept going. They tried to make life impossible by first complaining about an external male teacher but not making it clear to the Head of the Department so that it was supposed I was the perpetrator! (Imagine confusing between a male and a female leaving everything else to speculation!) I was able to prevent a suicide and bring the girls to order and then they invented it, from god knows where, that I was leaving! By the end of the year they thought I was better than another external male teacher teaching the same subject, landing me in trouble again.

Since then there have been so many complains and confusions that there have been times when I doubted myself! I tried forming a debate club which flopped as students were too busy with other things to waste time on such trifles. They had so many preoccupations that some students complained when I asked them to concentrate on studies - as the semester system hardly allows for anything else but study - that I was interfering with their personal lives! My job is only to teach and not to bother about what happens outside my class. I guessed my problem is I care too much!

But the success stories have been really rewarding considering how I have had to fight for each one. I had students who came to study English Literature without any background knowledge of literature – Bangla or English. Shaping them up and seeing them pass with flair has been one of the most rewarding experiences though only a few acknowledge our contribution or even remember us once they are past the hurdle. Some students brought gifts which I could not accept while I was still teaching them, its just a principle I hold onto, but I never saw them after they passed. But I had one student who made me a dress, same as one she wore which I praised, after she passed from IIUC.

I was touched when on my second trip to Sylhet with my students when I woke up from a brief sleep after Fajr to find myself covered in six shawls. I had looked after them the whole night and now they covered me when they thought I was cold. They also looked after my kids the night we were coming back from Sylhet because I had fallen ill. They made me cry when I was leaving IIUC. I hate expressing my emotions and I did not cry in front of people even on my wedding day! But my previous and current, English and other subjects students were there in my Farewell Program. Their speeches and their heartfelt farewell made me lose control of my emotions. I brought their gifts to Canada with me in spite of having to leave a lot of important things such as my books behind. I still have their text messages in my cellphone saying how much they loved me and how they will miss a mother and a sister. I still look at them regularly. But they call and write too and share all good and bad things with me. And surprisingly, I am also in contact with many of our male students whom I never really got to know as students in Bangladesh as they studied in a different campus.

So, I did see success in the end though it was not spontaneous. That is why I said what I did, not that I like one or another group of students more or less, but to measure how much they like me!

I have taught a few students after coming to Canada- two from middle school and two from high school. Thankfully two were straight and two had to be straightened. But the best thing about it was that I found out, once again, that I enjoy teaching and enjoy more the love that accompanies it. So, I might go back to teaching after all!

The Streams

Went to Lake Louise and Banff today. It was a beautiful day with occasional showers and a generally overcast sky (which makes me happiest!). The mountain ranges on both sides of the road mingled with the clouds at the mountain tops to form a unanimous whole. They were all covered with evergreens and other trees as in all parts of what I have seen so far of Canada, giving the mountains a whole pallette full of hues ranging from greens to blues in a flawless mixture till it gets lost in the ash and white of the clouds. Some of the tallest mountains were covered in snow at the top giving birth to streams and waterfalls rushing down the mountainsides. Amazingly it took me back to trips in Sikim and Sylhet.
The Sangu lake, high up in the mountains of Sikim, emerging from the mighty Kanchanjangha, was sorrounded by high peaks which were covered in snow all the year round and melted a little daily to gather in the lake which then overflowed to give birth to the Tista river - beautiful, clear greenish blue waters rushing over rocks and stones sorrounded by trees on both sides till it sparkles and giggles and makes you laugh out loud as if you have had a little glimpse into heaven! Lake Louise was similar but somehow not the same. Perhaps I am not so much in love with the crowds that infest tourist spots. Perhaps I like the untouched and rugged beauty of nature as I found in Sikim but not in the well developed lakeside of Lake Louise.
The thin streams on the mountains on our way to Banff reminded me of the numberless waterfalls we saw descending from the mountains in Sylhet under the influence of the monsoon rains. The human mind is like a stream too and does not follow any particular direction. From streams I was suddenly lost in the memories of our journey to Jaflong with Mawla Bhai at the helm. God bless the man! Allah alone knows how many songs he knows by heart and under his skillful and humurous leadership we all sang and joked as one, the whole busfull of people had turned friends who could share their thought with everybody! Yet as we passed by the mountains running down in waterfalls with torrential clouds and shower drops hanging overhead, he led us all in a praise of the One Almighty Allah who had created all this beauty, Tabarak Allah!
That reminded me of our trip to Madhabkunda where I felt something unique for the first time but could not perfectly express it (as I always found it difficult to bare my soul) though Mawla bhai thought there was somehting more to what I had begun to express and abruptly stopped. I was sitting on a rock (like a villain as Riaz Bhai took photos to prove to everybody later on!) and watching everbody in their various pursuits in the lap of nature (God bless the man who invented sunglasses, particularly large ones!). What overwhelmed me was how the people I knew to be important or selfish or proud or with some such disease of the heart were all cured by the proximity to nature. I knew it would be shortlived (what good thing in life isn't?) but it felt good for those few moments to see everyone in their prime quality - innocence!
That reminded me of my second trip to Sylhet which was not as colourful but two incidents made it meaningful.
I could not sleep the whole night as various people were passing through a bogey full of girls whose parents had entrusted us with their safety. After Fajr, looking at the beautiful sunrise which Fahmida text messaged me not to miss (as if I would miss it for the whole world!), I felt quite sleepy and pulling my shawl over myself, dozed off. When I woke up, I was feeling quite refreshed, warm and comfortable. I saw my girls quietly scurrying around, talking in a hushed voice and myself covered in at least four more shawls! My students thought I looked cold and took care to give me a few hours of perfect sleep! May Allah bless them all!
The other incident I remember is going to the kitchen of the hotel where we stayed to cook for my few months old son. On the last day there were some complications with rooms and the eleven rooms we were occupying were reduced to four for the remaining day. My room was also axed. As I could not go out for the day's trip with the rest due to illness, I decided to leave the room at twelve as required. I went to inform them at eleven that I was ready to be removed to one of the four remaining rooms. The staff came frequently and talked and inquired about our wellbeing and brought lunch at one, but nobody showed any interest to vacate me. I fell asleep waiting for someone to get me out. Woken at three by a clamourous group of girls, all desperate to use the bathroom ( imagine 75 girls with 3 bathrooms to share between themselves!), I went to ask them what they were doing about what was technically no longer my room and guess my own desperation when they said I could keep the room till I left that evening! I did not have enough money to pay for it! They said they would not charge me which was even worse. I could not let IIUC pay for my room beyond the budget! Then they explained to me that they were giving me this facility for free because they liked the way our girls were polite and well trained! They were all there to say goodbye with tearful eyes when I was leaving (how can people be so generous to strangers they met for no more than three days?) and they took special care to bring my son's food to my room before we started off in spite of the pressure of packing food for all of us for the train unbidden and unexpected! They called me on occasions from Sylhet after that till I left Bangladesh to ask about our well being.
It all makes me believe, people are naturally good. It is only when there is a conflict of interests that Shaitan lends us a hand and makes monsters of us. If only we could defeat him at that point ............. if ...........
